White Sands Missile Range Museum

Had an opportunity to visit the White Sands Missile Range Museum. It’s a pretty neat little place. Most all of everything is outside. With a V2 in a dedicated building. There is a small indoor museum, though due to my timeline I wasn’t able to visit. Oh well, gives me something to look forward to next time I’m in that neck of the woods.

The Museum is really just a rocket garden, similar to the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center. They’ve got rockets and missiles of all different sizes and eras. Though, nearly everything is from the cold war and later. They also had some of the range recording equipment on display which was incredibly neat. The only downside is that not every weapon is labelled. So you either need to have a great knowledge of cold war test weapons, or accept you may just always wonder what a weapon was.

Fat Man

The whole camera with the old school movie camera on top is pretty cool.

Pretty sure this is a Pershing series of weapons, maybe a test bed? The INF Treaty called out that only seven inert Pershing II could be retained for display purposes. Of which, one is in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. With another in Central Armed Forces Museum in Moscow, Russia. Maybe this is one of the remaining 5?

RP-76 Target Drone

Looks to be some variant of the Standard Missile. Though the description plaque was missing.

SM-2 on a stick.

Not entirely sure of the purpose of the turret. Though it was cool! Mark 39 5-Inch

Believe this to be a Pershing I.

The rest of these pictures are inside the V2 building. They had this one laying on its side with the panels open. I think it was only light via daylight, and being I was there around dawn on a rainy day, the lighting wasn’t the best.
